Chapter 1
Read Chapter 1
I was a young man,
When first she came to me.
I came out of the turbulent sea.
Lost and forgotten,
Tired and torn
“Come in she said. “I’ll keep you warm.”
We met in the doorway overgrown with thorns,
And stood on the flag-stones a little bored.
Her hand was hot and her smile bright.
In her window burned a gentle light.
Her floors were carpeted.
Her curtains black.
I felt the cold wind,
Leave my back,
And sitting down to watch her laugh,
I knew it was time to unpack.
I sold my hauberk,
My helm,
My sword.
Peace had won me without a war.

This gave me shivers - "I felt the cold winds leave my back", the black curtains, there is a lot of very evocative imagery in this, and I do love that she is making him choose peace instead - here's hoping they got out on one of Elendil's ships.
