I love what you did with the prompt! The explanation for the material, the origin of the somewhat crude map, and the story around it work really well. I hope Meneldur will get off lightly, poor young fellow!

I think it works, but using the Sun is much easier. The Sunrise is global on flat Arda, so you only have to measure the time from there until it passes above your head, to get longitude (east-west position). No chronometer is needed as on the round earth. And if we assume that Anar flies over the equator (which seems logical), it is super easy to obtain lattitude as well.
