Ryhme of Letters by turlas

Fanwork Information

Summary:

A smal chant made up by the schoolboys of Minas Tirith to help remember the Quenya names of the tengwar. In it the high and the low, the funny and the grave are strangely mixed, as it is pieced together from trivia of the Elder Days and notions relating to the then recent events of the War of the Ring

Chapter 1

Read Chapter 1

Tell me a proud gnomish tale,

of forging metal, book of lore,

shimmering lamp, scribbling feather,

That in Gondolin laboured of yore.

Sing me a dread gnomish tale,

of beating gate, resisting doom,

cleawing with iron webs of guile,

in places lone and very stinky.

Tell me an ugly goblin tale,

of strange spirits, from north who fare,

stealing treasure, hating breeze,

Be carefull yet the Master hears it!

Sing then a cheerful hafling tale,

of filling mouth, chatching with hook,

jaws agape, into hollows content to come.

Would that be a happy life?

Tell me then a grim mannish tale,

of faring to west, coveting gold,

or following gnome, bravely to torments dire,

The sins and feats of our sire.

Tell me lofty bright-elven tale,

of hearts lifted for Powers love,

receiving gifts from Sky-Lords home,

Forever exulting the High and Wise.

 Sing me merry elven tale,

from east who to the World has come,

teaching toungues to trees yet bare,

Who gave them that idea?
