To My Father

When I was very young, I thought you represented the pinnacle of perfection, the warmest, the strongest, the smartest, everything I wanted to be.

When I was older, I saw you as everything I ought to be, but did not want to be or never could be, determined, relentless, always sure of yourself.

When I grew up, I decided that I did not want to make the same arrogant mistakes that you had made.

Later, I felt as though I must defend and support you, because others discounted your genius and your wisdom, to do less would be disloyal, unconscionable.
