The next in a series of articles about ships passing to and from the West, Simon uses "The Fall of Númenor" to attempt to arrive at Tolkien's reading of the exordium to "Beowulf."

Elros looked mournful. The reception of his first musical composition was not what he’d expected.
Elrond’s snickers weren’t helping.
Makalaurë laid a consoling hand on his shoulder.
“Don’t fret, it is excellent for a beginner.”
“No, it was a disaster, not at all like I meant it to be,” Elros sighed, laying down his little pipe with an air of dejection.
“Hardly reason to give up,” Maedhros said, shooting a quelling look at Elrond. “You don’t suppose Kano here improvised a concerto the first time he met a cello, do you?”
The trajectory of Elros’ eyebrows strongly suggested he had.
