Two pieces for the collection about Orcs' humanity
This is a great collection -- one of my favorite fanfics would be a wonderful addition, but it's available only to registered members of AO3 at the moment. I don't think it used to be (I wrote an essay on it years ago, with Thornsmut's permission, and have recommended it to a lot of people I knew who weren't members of AO3, and at least some read it!). Anyway, if you'd be interested, it's Thorinsmut's "Free Orcs AU" series: https://archiveofourown.org/series/70926
This link is to an open-access journal: my essay, "Making or Creating Orcs: How Thorinsmut's 'Free Orc AU' Writest Back to Tolkien," is here: https://scholar.valpo.edu/journaloftolkienresearch/vol11/iss2/3/.
I think Thorinsmut solved the conflict/problem that Tolkien had over his Orcs in a way that he never could--it's one of the most brilliant AU's I've ever read!
