OMG! This is terrific. Crack at its highest level.

I remember thinking when I first read it that the whole incident seemed out of character for Fingolfin but then decided I did not know him as well as I thought I did. You are so right that he "is described in terms otherwise reserved for his more impetuous half-brother..." Nice way of working with that feeling a reader might have!

It's an epic narrative full of great imagery, but it isn't the sort of behaviour you'd expect to see from someone who's supposed to be rational and level-headed, right? Of course, Fingolfin has previously shown that he can do irrational (crossing the Helcaraxe wasn't exactly a sensible thing to do, either). But it was still fun to take the observation to its limit.
