Have you ever wanted to discuss fanfiction more deeply? Do you see fanfiction as literature just as worthy of serious consideration as the latest New York Times bestseller? Today's event will give participants a chance to dive deep into stories to think about what makes them work.
Important Dates
April 20: Last day to sign up a story for discussion
April 21: Discussion schedule posted and discussion sign-ups open
April 24: Last day to sign up for discussion slots if you have a story being discussed
April 26: Fanfiction Book Club discussion event on our Discord!
How It Works
At this point, sign-ups for stories to discuss are closed.
- Show up on our Discord at the scheduled times for the stories you are going to discuss, as well as your story (if applicable). The schedule is below. "Walk ins" are welcome too, so feel free to jump into a discussion even if you're not signed up!
- If your story is being discussed, you should sign up for two (or more!) stories that you would like to read and discuss. See the schedule below and use the discussion sign-up form. If you are not signed up by April 24, your story will be removed from the schedule.
- You do not have to have a story under discussion to participate. People who only want to read and discuss (versus submitting a fanfiction of their own for discussion) are most welcome! If you know that you will be online to discuss specific stories, please use the discussion sign-up form to let us know. The mod team will be planning to make sure each story has a discussion group, and it will be very helpful to us if you let us know which stories you plan to discuss.
By the same token, if you are not certain you will be online, please don't sign up so that we do not count on you being there. Just show up on our Discord server for the stories you want to discuss! - If you sign up and can't make it, please let the mods know by emailing us at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org. Again, as we are working hard to make sure every story has a discussion group, it is extremely useful to know who plans to be there and, likewise, who cannot.
- Stories rated Adult on our ratings system will be discussed in a separate channel.
- This is not a workshop. Assume the author has submitted a finished story that they are proud of. Do not offer critical feedback unless the author specifically asks for it during the discussion. We are discussing what about the story makes it work, both as a Tolkien-based fanfic and as a piece of literature. See our Guiding Questions for ideas on how to discuss a book club story!
Discussion Schedule
This is a draft schedule for now so that participating authors can confirm that their times and information are correct. Here is the form to sign up if you want to let us know you'll be attending the discussion.
All links point to the SWG or AO3. For more information on SWG stories (characters, warnings, etc.), click the "Table of Contents" link at the top of the story. If you need to convert the schedule into your own timezone, here is a timezone converter. As always, email the mods with questions or for help at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.

How to Discuss a Story
Discussing a story in this format can feel pretty intimidating. A good starting place is always what makes the story effective for you. What caught your eye, kept you reading, or made you think deeper or differently about something than you did before?
Below is a list of questions that can help guide that thinking. We are not going to follow these questions during the discussion, you certainly aren't required to answer them all (or any of them!), and they are not the only approaches to a story. They are intended to only help distill out the reasons a story works from the wordless adoration that often follows reading a story you love.
- What "made" this story for you? Where was the author most successful?
- What character or characters did you most connect with? How did the author write authentic, complex characters?
- How did the author structure the story? Did it build toward a single turning point? Include multiple conflicts? Use flashbacks, flashforwards, or other strategies to develop character and story?
- What was the story's message or theme? How does this compare with the common themes of Tolkien's writings?
- What about the author's writing or style supported their ideas?
- How did the author use canon? Did they use canon in any interesting or surprising ways?
- How did the author's worldbuilding use and expand on Tolkien's canon?
- How does this story contribute to the fandom's conversation about a character or idea from the texts? Does the author use or invert fanon? Take a position on a question or controversy discussed in the fandom?
