I shudder to think of what Maedhros's childhood would have been like if he hadn't had Maglor for a brother.  His closeness with his little brother gave him a lot of much-needed emotional support, and if he wasn't able to please his father, at least he was able to feel good in his role as 'responsible big brother'.

such a lovely sad story. Poor Maedhros--never quite good enough for Fëanor, even though he strove to be his whole life. The destruction of this family is so tragic. I do feel Fëanor, in addition to bring a perfectionist was a bit of a narcissist. I can't imagine he and Nerdanel could have managed the seven sons without Maedhros acting as a spare parent. Thank goodness he had Makalaurë--I can't imagine how difficult it would have been alone.

beautifully written.
