The Gift by Ithilwen

Fanwork Notes

Although chronologically the first story in my Maedhros cycle, it was one of the last written. I penned it when I realized readers needed to see this scene from my Maedhros's childhood if there were to fully understand the decisions he made later in his adult life.

Table of Contents

This story takes place in Valinor; accordingly, I've chosen to use the characters' Quenya names, which are as follows:

Nelyafinwë or Maitimo - Maedhros

Kanafinwë or Makalaurë - Maglor

Turkafinwë - Celegorm

For the meaning of the names, see the Author's Notes at the end of the story.

I would like to thank Tyellas for providing me with invaluable information regarding glassblowing, and the various things that can go wrong during the process.

Disclaimer: The characters and the setting are gratefully borrowed from the works of J. R. R. Tolkien (except for Carmandil, who's a gift from Finch). I own nothing.

I shudder to think of what Maedhros's childhood would have been like if he hadn't had Maglor for a brother.  His closeness with his little brother gave him a lot of much-needed emotional support, and if he wasn't able to please his father, at least he was able to feel good in his role as 'responsible big brother'.

such a lovely sad story. Poor Maedhros--never quite good enough for Fëanor, even though he strove to be his whole life. The destruction of this family is so tragic. I do feel Fëanor, in addition to bring a perfectionist was a bit of a narcissist. I can't imagine he and Nerdanel could have managed the seven sons without Maedhros acting as a spare parent. Thank goodness he had Makalaurë--I can't imagine how difficult it would have been alone.

beautifully written.
