What is the difference between a series, link collection, and multimedia fanwork?

Our archive offers a number of different types of fanworks that you can choose from when sharing your work here. Three of them have some similarities that might create confusion when deciding which to choose: series, link collection, and multimedia fanwork. Below, we have described the features of each to help you decide which is the best fit for your fanwork. As always, send a message to our moderators if you need help.

Series

A series is used to collect two or more fanworks posted on the SWG into a single location.

  • Series fanworks are presented as links. You can choose the order the links are listed, but visitors can choose to click on them (or not) in whatever order they choose.
  • You can include the following fanwork types: artwork, audio, link collection, playlist, reference, series, video, and writing.
  • Fanworks in a series must be posted on the SWG archive.
  • Fanworks in a series may be created by you or by others.
  • A series will display the summary and any warnings that the creator of the fanwork has input. You will not input any additional information about the fanwork.

Link Collection

A link collection is used to collect and organize links from within and outside the SWG.

  • Link collections are presented as links. You can choose the order the links are listed, but visitors can choose to click on them (or not) in whatever order they choose.
  • You can link to any content on the SWG site or to any site outside the SWG.
  • Links can point to content created by you or anyone else.
  • You will input all information into a link collection: the title of the content you're linking and a summary of that content.

Multimedia Fanwork

A multimedia fanwork is a single fanwork that consists of two or more of the other fanwork types.

  • Multimedia fanworks are a fanwork presented on a single page. You can choose the order of the components of the fanwork. Visitors do not need to click to view the components of the fanwork.
  • A multimedia fanwork can include the following fanwork types: artwork, audio, link collection, playlist, video, and writing.
  • Fanworks included in a multimedia fanwork must first be posted as individual fanworks on the SWG archive. You will have the option to have component fanworks not show up as individual fanworks on the archive, if you prefer, or you can also have them appear as standalone fanworks.
  • Multimedia fanworks include only content created by you or listed co-creators. Co-creators must give permission for their work to be included.
  • Multimedia fanworks display titles, notes, and content that you have input into the standalone fanwork components. You will have the opportunity to include tags on a multimedia fanwork and notes for the multimedia fanwork as a whole.
