Nerdanel is a better person than I am - a surprise public proposal would not go well! (Though clearly the proposal part wasn't entirely a surprise if she also had a silver ring at the ready. The public part, however...)

Heh! It would have been my nightmare, too, and I've thought long and hard about whether it would happen that way. I've seen a few public proposals at conventions, and while it always 'went well', I always felt super uncomfortable just watching. Some people seem to enjoy it, though! And it did feel like a very Feanor thing to pull off. Nerdanel, embarrassed though she is, apparently appreciates that he isn't treating their betrothal as some kind of secret, but something that should be glaringly obvious. ^^
