A fabulous story. I can imagine that having pledged himself wholly to Melkor, Mairon would have internalised most of the dark Vala's philosophy. That the Silmarils burned him when he put them into his master's iron crown is such a good headcanon. The internal dialogue ramps up as he sees the two remaining Fëanorians being cajoled by Eonwë to return to Valinor. And he realises that isn't his path.
