The Lay of Thranduil

Three ages of Arda,
Three Ages of dread,
Three nightmares I won and lost.
Greenwood the Great,
Home of my kin,
My heart cannot bear the cost.
From a wife in my bed,
Came the fear in my head,
That tears my heart to dust.

Do they know me my dear?
Do they feel my fear?
Am I broken or strong as the mountain!
O ye flames under moon,
Who dispel the gloom,
Kindle me to warranted action.
Let me bear thy flag high,
Hear the bells one day chime,
And the court once more sing with laughter.
O dragon lonesome,
Don’t you sleep now, so fearless.
The dawn is coming night to break thee.
O dragon ruthless,
Don’t you dream now, so calmly.
The winds are changing, swift to cheat thee.
Come let the day creep down upon your pace,
And wipe clean the slate of years.
Night is falling though I stand in place.
Maybe someday they will shed my tears.
Goodnight forest that has reared me.
Goodnight land I called best.
Daybreak comes to curtly take me.
I will let go,
Home in the West.
I must let go,
Home in the West.
