Amid the Silence

Double drabble; written for the 30yearssilm community at LiveJournal.com a good three years ago or so. Posted now in honour of the ever lovely Míriel's bio this month. ♥

Voiceless

The stars blinked coldly down and a soft breeze filtered through the trees. It rose up to the balcony to play with the strands of raven-dark hair of the boy standing there in a silent vigil.

He sighed, eyes scanning the sky intently; he could have sworn that he had heard something – someone – calling to him just as sleep had been about to claim him. A voice…soft and quiet and somehow familiar, saying his name in a way that made it sound like an endearment. It had had a musical quality, melodious and carrying despite the distance from which it appeared to have originated: somewhere above.

Which was very odd, because his room was at the highest floor of his home. The roof had been devoid of anyone (he’d checked) and there was no one else outside as far as the eyes could see. And yet he knew he had heard…

The light of the cool stars impassively brushed his face, mingling with Telperion’s glow. He turned away, disappointed in himself. Had he really wanted to hear her again so much that…

The door to the balcony shut and miles away in the dark halls of Mandos, Fëanor's dead mother continued to weave her son’s image and did not say his name again.
