Tarilanya sat down on the wall that edged the terraces of the vineyard and breathed in the hot summer air. She’d tasted wines all day, her reopened shop needed to be stocked up, and the memories of the tastes on her tongue made her heart open wide.

She was so happy she could have shouted it to the blue sky above her. As happy as she hadn’t thought she’d never be again when she’d been taken as a thrall to Angband after the fall of Gondolin.

The sun burned down on her bare arms, the scars stood out pale on her skin that had lost the paleness of captivity. Let people stare, she didn’t care, she would not hide what she’d gone through, what she’d survived to be able to sit again in the sun and breathe the air of freedom.
