Whenever he came to visit, or when they were in company together, Elwing was aware of Finrod watching her, searching her face as though he was looking for something. Whenever she glanced at him he would smile, and engage in friendly conversation—but even when one of them moved away his gaze would linger, and it made Elwing itch.
Finally, she said, “You can say it, you know. I have heard it before.”
He looked startled. “Say what?”
“That I look like Lúthien. Everyone who knew her says so.”
To her surprise, he shook his head, looking wistful. “No—well, you do—but I have been thinking of someone else. You do not have her features, but you have some of her manner.” Elwing frowned at him, and he laughed. “And her scowl! She was fierce.”
“But who do you mean?”
“Emeldir. Barahir gets the credit, but Emeldir was with him, too, during the Bragollach. She would have marched into Valinor and shouted at the Valar until they listened, had she the chance.”
“I did not do that,” Elwing said.
“No,” Finrod agreed, “but I imagine you wanted to.”
He wasn’t wrong. Elwing leaned forward. “Tell me more about her.”
Left you a comment on AO3…
Left you a comment on AO3 also but just wanted to say here how beautiful this is and I love that you refer back to Emeldir!
not Lúthien
Always being compared to Lúthien must have become annoying very quickly for Elwing (and her descendants).
It's great to see Elwing's…
It's great to see Elwing's human relatives getting some love too, they tend to get lost in Lúthien's shadow. Amazing to see a story about them!
