Two Queens deserted
Read Two Queens deserted
I am so tired
as I sit beside her
in this darkened room.
She will allow no lamps
of Feanor within her halls,
nor is she fond of fire,
perhaps remembering the Spirit
that took so much;
her husband, her oldest son and daughter
all her grandchildren.
She rarely speak,
nor does she seem to remember
that others too
were left behind.
I too lost husband and children -
none of mine returned.
Her hands are still soft and fine,
mine has grown callouses
in the time that has gone
both in the time of darkness and now
when the stars are returning.
So many left, both men and women,
although more women stayed
than did men.
I feel the burden of my husband's house
upon my shoulders
as I struggle to give aid,
to rebuild,
to reshape,
and beyond all
to give hope.
My law-brother rules here now
yet he is torn
between the city and the shores,
and so no one else
sees only the city
and the growing misery
that they left behind.

Thank you, Uli, this is wonderful and captures so many themes that I see also when contemplating what must have happened after the Darkening. I also see the women taking the lead in rebuilding what was left behind and, most of all, giving encouragement and hope. I love it--thank you again! :)
Re: (1) Comment by Dawn Felagund for Two Queens deserted
I was thinking on how we mostly hear of men leaving and so played with the idea that a lot of women (like anaire and amarie and initial earwen) were left behind, leaving a less balanced society and one where the wome suddenly had to start taking up tasks usually done by their husbands. Sort of what happened around the world during the two great wars I guess.
And I am glad you liked it, I had another slightly stronger version of it but lost it :( Eilidh managed to write and save nonsense (obviously she is not even 2) over the file when i answered a phonecall. bah,
*hugs*

I just re-read Dawn's The Work of Small Hands and it's amazing how easily this falls in line with it (or works as an extension, I suppose) - wonderfully done, but then I'm not surprised given your knack for poetry. :)
