‘That was intended to be an obscene gesture?’ Melian repeated. ‘What does that mean, obscene?’

Celeborn wondered, desperately, whether he could tell her to ask Thingol but, in the interest of keeping the peace, he supposed he better had not. At least Melian was listening patiently to his attempt at explanation without commenting on how much he hemmed and hawed.

‘I see,’ she said thoughtfully. ‘I suppose I will have to do something to persuade Ascarnor to look on me more kindly. Maybe you can advise me? Meanwhile do you think this is something Elu might really like to try?’

Chapter End Notes

In the original insta-drabble, I had provisionally used the name of Ufedhin from BOLT, but after a certain amount of over-thinking I decided to shift the blame onto a Sindarin OC instead. Ascarnor is from Chestnut's name list and means "impetuous flame". With thanks, as always, to Chestnut for allowing us generously to use their creative name list!

(Ascarnor can perhaps be one of the people who later went to Nan Elmoth with Eol as one of his servants.)

This was hilarious and I'm feeling very sorry for poor Celeborn here. I'm pretty sure there are subjects he'd rather not have to talk about with Melian of all people.
