April Challenge at tolkienshortfanworks
The tolkienshortfanworks challenge for April has been posted to the Dreamwidth community.
The thematic challenge for this month is: Wood.
This could be in the sense of "forest" or in the sense of the material.
It could also be "wood" as an element in compounds or names.
The formal challenge this time is: linnod.
This is the traditional verse form used by Gilraen in the Tale of Aragorn and Arwen (LOTR Appendix A).
We only have that one canonical example with translation:
Ónen i-Estel Edain, ú-chebin estel anim.
"I gave Hope to the Dúnedain, I have kept no hope for myself."
The name of the form probably means "chant-seven".
Our Sindarin example seems to show two times seven syllables, although there may be other ways to interpret the form.
Imitate the Sindarin original or its English translation in any way you like.
Alternatively, your piece could include someone using a short response in verse in the way Gilraen does, without your imitating the form of the linnod itself.
These prompts can be filled separately and freely combined with other challenges and prompts that allow this. New participants welcome.
More detals on the challenges at the linked post and at the Dreamwidth community.
Tolkien Ekphrasis Week 2025
Material culture and art add vibrancy to our lives, and it seems that there are so many options in Middle Earth ripe for interpretation! A poem on Nerdanel's statues, a tapestry capturing Nessa's dance, a prose fic describing the impact of seeing Númenor's frescoes, a painting exploring the beautiful quotidian architecture of a Hobbit hole…
This is a Tolkien-fandom-wide event dedicated to the art of ekphrasis in Tolkien's worlds. Its goal is to illuminate the artistic surroundings of the places, people, and stories we love, in as many media as possible. As such, fanworks are welcome to take almost any form: see the FAQ for the full list!
The prompts are multi-part. The first part of the prompt is mandatory, describing the kind of art to be interpreted. The subsequent parts are optional thematic, formal, or visual add-ons that people may choose to incorporate or not.
In short, the timeline is:
- Read prompts starting March 17.
- Create!
- Post tagged work to AO3 before June 9 deadline.
- Enjoy daily reveals between June 10 and June 16.
- Amnesty day June 17 for late posters.
Inclusion
Tolkien Ekphrasis Week is open to all characters, genres, and ratings, and all Tolkien canons. This includes books, movies both live-action and animated, fan-made films like Born of Hope, TV shows, and game canons such as Lord of the Rings Online. It also includes Tolkien's non-Arda fictional works, such as Roverandom. Crossovers between two or more Tolkien canons are welcome.
Tolkien Ekphrasis Week wants to be as inclusive as possible. As such:
- All canons and versions of canon are equally welcome and encouraged to participate.
- Fan creators of all levels of experience should feel more than welcome to join in the fun.
- All languages are welcomed, and works in languages other than English are actively encouraged.
- All styles of art and all types of fic are permitted. Apart from following the Art Form content prompt for each day, there are no restrictions on genre, style, rating, or ship. There are two exceptions: first, no character bashing; second, no AI-generated writing or art.
Above all, this event is supposed to get us thinking and feeling about art, which is for everyone. With this in mind, TEW asks participants to be respectful and inclusive at all times. In particular, TEW values its queer and trans participants and participants of color and will moderate as necessary to ensure that this event remains a welcoming space.
Please see the FAQ for all rules and full instructions on how to post and tag.

Housekeeping
The DW site is the primary home of Tolkien Ekphrasis Week: that is where to check first for dates, news, FAQs, links, and prompts!
Prompts will also be posted here on Tumblr. The Tumblr blog will be used for event promotion ahead of the event, answering questions via the ask function, and reblogging your creations, if they are posted and tagged on Tumblr.
This event does not and will not exist on any other form of social media other than Tumblr and DW, though I encourage you to spread the word in your other online communities.
If you have any questions, you can get in touch with the mod, @chestnut_pod, via Tumblr ask or comments on the Dreamwidth community's equivalent post.

Teitho March/April Challenge: Mothers
Exploring the idea of mothers in Tolkien lets us go behind the scenes. We have quite a few mothers directly in the narrative, primarily in the Silmarillion—where we see Miriel, Nerdanel, Morwen, Idril, Aredhel, Luthien, Elwing, and even have mentions of Anaire and Earwen.
In The Lord of the Rings we read of Galadriel being Celebrian’s mother and Arwen’s grandmother. Aragorn’s mother Gilraen, Faramir and Boromir’s mother Finduilas, and Rosie Cotton—Sam’s wife—are all mentioned in the narrative. The Hobbit gives us a memory of Belladonna Took, Bilbo’s mother, and mentions of Thorin’s sister Dis—the mother of Fili and Kili. The stories of any of these characters would make for fascinating fic! Or art!
There are many who remain unmentioned and unnamed—Legolas’s mother, Gimli’s, the mothers of generations of Dunedain, of Gondorians, of the Rohirrim, of the Shire. And consider Ungoliant, mother of Shelob! And mothers among the ranks of orcs.
We are excited to see where this prompt takes you and which character gives you inspiration! Please submit your fic or art by April 30 to teitho.contest@gmail.com

October challenge at tolkienshortfanworks
The tolkienshortfanworks challenge for October has been posted to the community on Dreamwidth.
The thematic prompt is : sound versus silence, to be interpreted in any way you like.
The formal challenge is to write a tanka (link goes to Wikipedia entry).
Like the haiku of the September challenge, this is a Japanese-inspired poetic form, although a bit less well known.
The pattern is:
5-7-5-7-7
(Some examples written in the Tolkien fandom from AO3.)
Historically it is the longer form from which the haiku evolved.
If you like the idea, your characters could do a kind of renga or linked poem, dividing the tanka between speakers:
One speaker provides the 5-7-5 lines and the other speaker completes the tanka by adding the 7-7 lines.
(This can evolve into a longer string, if the occasion allows!)
As always, both of these prompts can be filled independently and freely combined with other prompts. New participants are welcome; all that is required is a Dreamwidth account.
More details on the challenge at the linked post.

TRSB Is Looking for a New Mod
The Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang is looking for a new mod for their 2024 event. Founder and moderator Raiyana describes the job as follows:
We are searching for a new addition to the TRSB mod team, preferably someone who Arts and can bring that perspective to our writing biased group. An ability to read spreadsheets is also useful and enough patience to get through emails from people who definitely did not read the faq because the answer is right there. In return, we offer vent space, boozy voice chats post-claims and a fair number of terrible but funny jokes along with the chance to see and influence the event behind the scenes!
Interested or need to know more? Contact the TRSB mods here. If you're on Tumblr, their ask box is here.
Flufftober 2023
Flufftober offers thirty-one prompts and some extras to fill the month of October with as much fluff as possible on Tumblr and AO3.
Guidelines
- Incest or pedophilia won’t be reblogged.
- No hate or ship bashing - we’re all different and we all love different things. As long as it doesn’t go against rule #1, it’s allowed.
- Tag correctly! Trigger warnings (including cheating!), ships, ratings, (pure) smut, etc - it’s all fine as long as you tag it.
- There’s absolutely no word count restriction, write as little or as much as you like.
- In regards to art, anything goes: drawings, paintings, collages, mood boards, gifsets, videos, playlists… the sky’s the limit (though not really…)
- While we can’t force you to write fluff or create fluffy art, please try to keep in mind that this is a fluff event.
- You can start writing and/or arting as soon as you see this - but please refrain from posting before the respective day.
- You can participate on as many days as you like, even if it’s just one; you can also create multiple entries for the same day.
- You can replace prompts from the original list with either or all of our prompt extras; you can also mix them with the original prompts or create for them in addition to the 31 original prompts, that's completely up to you.
- It’s okay to write one story/a series for all the prompts as long as it’s separated into chapters and the respective chapter/work is posted on the given day.
- You do not have to stick to one ship or even one fandom - switch as often as you like to or even write for multiple ships for one day.
- The ship does not have to be a romantic one! Friendship and family feels are more than welcome (but this is not a way to get around rule #1!)
- This event can be combined with other events as long as the other event allows it.
- Late entries are always welcome, even if it is months later.
- All fandoms and ships are welcome - fanon and canon - as long as they’re of age (in case you want to add smut) and not related.
Tagging
- Please use the tag #flufftober2023
- Since tags are sometimes wonky, make sure to also add @flufftober in your post
- We will try to catch them all, but please don't be mad if we miss a post or if it gets reblogged a bit late
- If you're absolutely certain a post has slipped past us, feel free to send an ask with the link to your post
- To make reblogging easier for us, make sure to add the following tags: #flufftober2023 #day [xy] #[fandom] #[ship and/or main character(s)]
- If you're using a prompt extra tag it as #alt [number]
You can add your creation to the collection flufftober2023 or flufftober_2023. Late entries are always welcome, on tumblr as well as the ao3 collection!
Prompts and additional information on the Flufftober event can be found here.

A trick should be more horror, occult, supernatural, or scary. A treat should be more sweet, sexy, or fluffy. September challenge at tolkienshortfanworks
The September Challenge has been posted at the tolkienshortfanworks community on Dreamwidth.
The thematic prompt is Silver, with a choice of three quotation prompts.
All three are from The Silmarillion, but that does not mean your fill has to be; there is no expectation to stick to the canonical context and you can pick and choose what to respond to in the quote.
A
Tilion was a hunter of the company of Oromë, and he had a silver bow. He was a lover of silver, and when he would rest he forsook the woods of Oromë, and going into Lórien he lay in dream by the pools of Estë, in Telperion's flickering beams; and he begged to be given the task of tending for ever the last Flower of Silver.
B
And she gave him store of lembas, the waybread of the Elves, wrapped in leaves of silver, and the threads that bound it were sealed at the knots with the seal of the Queen, a wafer of white wax shaped as a single flower of Telperion
C
And that dome was roofed all with silver, and rose glittering in the sun, so that the light of it could be seen afar off; but soon the light was darkened, and the silver became black.
The formal challenge is to write a haiku.
We were thinking here of the format with three lines with the syllable count 5-7-5, but I know that other interpretations of the haiku format in English exist and these are also welcome.
These prompts can be filled independently and combined with other challenges.
New participants are welcome. More details on the challenges at the linked post.
