Troll Guard

 

 

“What do you see in them?” asked Morgoth.  “They are dull as dirt and impossible to train.” 

 

“Yes,” responded Gothmog as he looked dispassionately at the cadre of trolls who made up his bodyguard.  “They are all that you say.  But they are also extremely difficult to slay, and thus will make an excellent living shield for me during the upcoming battle.” 

 

“As you will.  Go forth and be my Battle Master against the sons of Fëanor.  Cause them great lamentation, making my vengeance against the Eldar remembered in sorrow until the breaking of Arda.” 

 

Thus began the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. 

 

 A/N  And it is said, in the Silmarillion, that Húrin stood alone…and his axe “…smoked in the black blood of the troll-guard of Gothmog until it withered, and each time that he slew Húrin cried:  ‘Aurë entuluva! Day shall come again!’…”
