Chapter 1

Fingolfin lay in the deep pit of utter despair, his body broken. In vain he tried crawling from the pool poisoned by that dire spectre, Morgoth the Black, Prince of the charnel house of Angband, and cursed outcast of the Ainur. On the rim above him appeared a small black kitten, the tiniest of living creatures in a forsaken world, lost, alone, and knowing nothing of the wars of Elves and Men.
'Flee! Take the message of my fate to Thorondor!' gasped the High King of the Noldor. 'Flee! before he returns!' The kitten vanished into the long dark night.
