Fandom Chocolate … or Authors Love Comments by Dawn Walls-Thumma
[]Tolkien Fanfiction Survey data shows that authors view comments as driving their motivation to create fanfiction. However, perception of comments by authors is part of a larger shift in fandom around how and how often fans interact with each other.
Passing Ships by Simon J. Cook
[]The arrival and departure of ships across the Great Sea carries mythic significance for the peoples of Middle-earth. The image of ships crossing out of and back into a mysterious West appears as well in Beowulf and is alluded to in Tolkien's tower analogy in his lecture "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics," where the tower allows those who climb it to observe the passage of the ships.

Scribbles & Drabbles 2024
A chill Tolkien event, where artists make art, and authors write little stories in response. Begins in June and ends in November.
This is so powerful and your description with it brought tears to my eyes. The way you use colour and movement to evoke different emotions is so powerful. This feels like grief meeting with anger and fear. The thought of Nerdanel in Aman, unaware of the fates of her family (but probably on some level able to feel their pain), is a feeling and image that actually drew me back to the Silm fandom and this art very much captures it.
Oh, thank you so much for your comment and lovely compliment! This was my first fan art painting and still one of my favourites. After reading Another Man's Cage, and also Statues (both by Dawn), this moment from Nerdanel's perspective became that much more poignant for me.
I love how the contrasts work here, with shapes and colour.
You've linked Nerdanel with that great conflagration in the East by the colour of her hair as well as emotionally.
And the flamelight in the East has all those different possible associations, too: the meaning of Feanor's name, the burning of the ships at Losgar, the battle of Dagor Bragollach, also the sunrise...
Oh, thank you, I'd not thought of the other associations beyond the burning ships. Hmm, lots of future history in that fiery glow.
Losgar is the most obvious interpretation, canonically, but the impact of that fiery glow is so great, in the picture, that it seemed to me capable of standing in for more than that...
