Chapter 1
Read Chapter 1
Only a child who understood nothing of the loss to our people of my great grandfather Finwë, I swore no oath in Aman. Yet, more than many of the staunchest supporters of Fëanáro, I understand the violence inherent in the theft of one’s heart’s dearest creation and the deep craft embodied in his greatest work. I admired the wisdom and shining soul of my beautiful cousin Finrod Felagund, but even he rashly made pledges that ruled out rational thought and the fulfillment of which turned into tragic folly. I am tired to my very bones of the seduction of pride, the ranting about betrayal, honor, and revenge. Abhorring the dusty taste of loss and the metallic flavor of death, I finally will refuse to follow my blinded father into his ignominious exile from these walls. I turn my back on their melodramas of political intrigue and dedicate my life to my art.

We think alike, you and I. It's just as well that we are dealing with slightly different characters and POV's :-)

Thanks! You know what they say about that: great minds think alike! ;)

It is a very interesting point--that Celebrimbor could have meant to repudiate Finrod's course of action as much as Curufin's, if less obtrusively so. Of course, he didn't really succeed in placing himself above betrayal by dedicating his life to his art--unfortunately, as Annatar was to prove to him!
Re: (2) Comment by Himring for To Place Oneself above ... [Ch 1]
I don't believe Celebrimbor was capable of placing himself completely beyond either loyalty or betrayal. Not sure which was the right thing to do at Nargothrond, however. The problem with choices in epic tales is one is usually screwed whichever choice one makes. Annatar just happened to be there in the right place at the right time. One could say that lack of interest in Annatar's gifts would have made one safe. But that would be a rotten backward-looking way to live also.
