Elusive

Elrond arrives at the beach, but it is empty, the singer has gone. Only a note hangs over it, lingering among the steady sounds of the wind and the sand, not a single, simple note, but shimmering like a thread plucked from a tapestry. It allows Elrond to guess at a melody, but not to hear it.

It has been left for him. It is not enough.

‘You cannot fix it by singing,’ he remembers saying to Maglor severely, long ago.

‘I am not trying to do that,’ Maglor answered, but then frowned uncertainly.

Not enough.

Still different from nothing.
