Tolkien Meta Week Starts December 8!
Join us December 8-14, here and on Tumblr, as we share our thoughts, musings, rants, and headcanons about all aspects of Tolkien's world.
While the SWG hopes to inspire creativity, we also look to foster community. To that end, we’re trying something new with our Matryoshka challenge format. (This is something of an experiment, but we’re hoping it gets SWG members talking, newcomers and long-timers alike!)
This month, if you would like to attempt the challenge, regardless of the difficulty level you choose, you will be given only one prompt to start you off. The rest of your prompts will come from interacting with other SWG members, whether that’s in comments, conversations on our Discord, on other social media, or in-person. (The interaction does not have to be on the SWG website itself, or even necessarily in SWG spaces.) When giving prompts to others, you are free to pass on any of the prompts you have. The mods will also have a few prompts up their sleeves to give out in interactions rather than requests for starter prompts, so feel free to talk to us, too!
Fill out the form here to request your first prompt. Note that you will also be able to add any information here about whether and how other participants should contact you. We will maintain a list on the challenge page. To update your information, contact us or fill out another form.
We will maintain a list of participating members. You can:
It is up to you how you share your prompts with others! If you are comfortable interacting one-on-one, you can ask others to contact you via the SWG site or social media. You can post your prompt publicly on your social media as well. (If you prefer not to interact one-on-one, this is here for you!) If you post your prompt to Tumblr, use the tag #swg meet and greet.
You can choose your own difficulty level for this challenge. Our Matryoshka difficulty levels are as follows:
Typically, we ask Matryoshka challenge participants to use the prompts in the order they are sent. For this year's challenge, you can use prompts in any order you want. If you have more prompts than you want to complete, you can pick and choose the ones you want.
Challenge participants can either gather all of their prompts before beginning their fanwork or start a fanwork and gather prompts as they go.
If you've read to the bottom of the directions, yay, thank you, you've made Dawn (who is a teacher and loves when people read directions, as her students almost never do) very happy. Have a prompt for free: “Don’t tell anybody!”
Thank you to Cuarthol for this month's banner and stamps!

Minor catastrophes cluster on the site of an archaeological dig and someone even gets hurt. But it could be worse, as an unexpected arrival changes the course of events. Then something happens in the middle of the night... And it turns out that our heroine can't tell anybody, at least not in (academic) print.
