I love this idea!  The character is extremely sympathetic, and the writing is very evocative--I really feel like I'm there, with him!

Couple minor notes: the tense changes from present to past and back in a few places, in a way that doesn't really feel natural, and you have a typo "fake" instead of "fate" in "fate worse than death."

But it appears that orcs have passed by since then, they have added small trinkets to the cairn in memory of the People who had died in the fiery onslaught.

I love their quiet ritual, leaving things behind.  Very beautiful!
