Light
He craved light. From the time that he entered Ea he was amazed by light – the multitude of wavelengths, the variety of colors. His eyes could see past the small visible light spectrum that the Firstborn were saddled with. He could see the full spectrum of light, from gamma rays through infrared radiation and beyond.
Of course it was not his fault that the Lamps were destroyed. Even though he influenced the maia who would become his own second-in-command, Sauron, to accomplish the destruction of the lamp Ormal. But he didn’t actually issue the orders for their destruction. When pieces of the lamps were gathered and given to him, however, he placed them in his personal chambers in his northern fortress. In fact, in the days of Isil and Anor when his fortress was breached in the War of Wrath, those who invaded Melkor’s personal chambers were astonished at the brilliance of the light that blazed forth from his bedroom doors.

Melkor breathed in the light and watched the captured light in Fëanor’s three silmarils when he wore them to events in Tirion. And a plot was hatched in his mind.
