The Highest Priority

Land gives way suddenly before me, replaced by open air and the great expanse of sea far below. I can hear, smell and feel Maedhros and Maglor running after me, the last of the accursed sons of Fëanor the Madman, and that spurs me into a new level of frenzy.

They desire the jewel on my necklace, shouting for it even as we are playing this deadly game of cat and mouse. But I do not wish to relinquish it. I cannot, after what my grandparents and parents have done to save and protect it. It is the most important thing in the world and I have to protect it, save it like beren and Lúthien and Dior my father did. I have to, even to my death.

My right foot finds the edge of the cliff, and my left soon follows. Strange that I am here again but for a very different case. I was here even yesterday, waiting and hoping that I at last would see my husband’s ship coming home. But the undulating expanse before me staid shipless – and so it does now.

The murderers shout something to me, but I can only hear the roaring of the sea and the music of the jewel on my breast. No, I do not want to hear them, listen to their lies. They are lying. They must have killed my sons anyway. But all the same, the silmaril is above everything.

They step closer, now pleading and cajoling me using my sons as bait. Heartless monsters…

I scream, letting out all the emotions I have suppressed, and jump over the cliff.
