Fanwork Notes

Written for B2MeM 2022.

Kortirion is both Tolkien's name for Warwick and the name of a city in Tol Eressea.
Originally, he thought of these as a single place, but later as two different cities of the same name.

Kortirion

Read Kortirion

Sometimes Maglor could almost believe that he does not need to cross the Sea to go home—as now, here, in a winding street in this ancient city of elms where old shadows linger at noon by the broken gate, while below the river called River flows away. The past is very present here and, where time seems so fluid, it is almost as if that other barrier might also be illusory, as if he could step into those shadows and fade through into Warwick’s twin in Tol Eressea.

But, then, a peacock screeches—and Maglor is all too solid.

Chapter End Notes

For the B2MeM 2022 the General prompt G-110: Kortirion.

This drabble adapts phrases and themes from Tolkien's poem "Kortirion among the Trees". An extract from this poem can be found at Tolkien Gateway. Kortirion belongs with some of Tolkien's earliest ideas within the Legendarium, but was retained and developed as a concept for some time, although perhaps not into its final stages.

Warwick, of course, still exists. It lies on the River Avon and the original meaning of the name Avon is "river."

Oh, I think I love every little bit about this drabble. The concept of 'twin cities' being really connected, in a way, like quantum particles, and Maglor finding some temporary comfort in the town. Your play with words. "where old shadows linger at noon" generated such an intense feeling of saudade in me, while "The past is very present here and, where time seems so fluid"... I feel this too, only, the current is so strong and, like River, flows in one direction, at its ordained pace.

"The river flows only in one direction, for us, but even so the imagination can sometimes seem to take us back against the current."

Yes! I like this... our minds can so easily transcend the current.

ETA: Sometimes too much importance is given to the material world and not enough credence to the potentially powerful effects of the imagination.
