Belzagar did risk everything to save Sakalkhor, against the odds, although it is hard that he did not or could not do it for Nimruzimir.

I suppose Nimruzimir found himself unable to let go, partly because Belzagar hadn't asked him to save him (and Sakalkhor also hadn't).

(And in a more deep-down way because Spock wouldn't, I suppose, unlike his alter ego... The one from another quadrant or ship, I mean, not the Numenorean alter ego.)

You always bring me around to Numenor!  It's something I never (or at least VERY rarely) read except when you write it, and you do it so compellingly.  The back and forth in time was very effective in this.  Poor, dear Nimruzimir ((hugs him so tight if he is willing to put up with it))
