Queen of Fire and Water by Himring
Fanwork Notes
For the Kings & Queens challenge, the queen being Tar-Miriel.
This was originally an idea I had for the last SWG crossover challenge. It alludes to motifs from The Rings of Power, but embeds them in a book-canonical setting. (I'm not tagging it as crossover now so as not to maybe disappoint RoP fans.)
Warnings: canon-typical background for the last days of Numenor; allusion to a specific person burned by Sauron in the Temple fire.

Queen of Fire and Water
Read Queen of Fire and Water
Miriel woke from another dream in which a snowstorm of summer blossom transmuted into a deadly avalanche of water.
Comes rather late, she murmured.
Nimloth had burned in the fire, the fire that had taken her last trusted confidante.
She pushed herself up. Flames seemed to lick the wall hanging, delicately woven by many hands. She had stared too long into Sauron’s fire and could seem to see little else than flames now, awake. She might as well be blind.
Tiles cracked under her feet. Had the endless storm hanging above them finally broken? Was it time to run yet?
Chapter End Notes
I have also incorporated a prompt from Tolkien100 here: summer storms.
There is an allusion to my story The Crane and the Crow here, but I assumed it could be understood by the reader without knowing the story.
Nimloth is the name of the White Tree of Numenor.
100 words in MS Word.
Ooh I love the slightly…
Ooh I love the slightly unreal edge to this, the line between wake and dream being a little blurry, and the future starting to bleed into everything.
Thank you very much,…
Thank you very much, cuarthol! Glad that blurring works for you!
She could see little else…
She could see little else than Sauron's flame... I really like how you have put that into words. Great drabble.
Thank you very much,…
Thank you very much, elennalore!
Míriel with foresight....
....of a kind. She dreams of the destruction and disintegration of her world. Very edgy and perhaps bittersweet. 🤍
Thank you, wisteria! Doom is…
Thank you, wisteria!
Doom is so close to Numenor that foresight and present fear mingle...
This is even more tragic…
This is even more tragic after rereading The Crane and the Crow. Miriel asks herself if it's time to run yet, but is there anywhere to run to? She's surrounded by Doom on all sides . . .
Thank you very much for re…
Thank you very much for re-reading the other story, Zdenka!
Yes, in the end the only way to run is up Meneltarma and we know how that ends. (Well, canonically, outside fix-it fics.)
Sounds like poor Tar-Miriel…
Sounds like poor Tar-Miriel is about to welcome the end.
Perhaps not quite that but…
Perhaps not quite that but it can also wear you out, waiting for the other shoe to drop...
Thank you very much, Grundy!
