On the Helcaraxë, Fingolfin does not pray to the Valar. How can he, when they have cursed his quest, his family, and his followers’ loyalty?
May the bold spirit of Finwë be with me, he prays silently, when the Ice cracks underfoot and the wind screams around them like a living thing in torment. When he takes his spear to hunt the elusive seals or a white bear: May my feet be as swift as my mother Indis, my aim as true.
Holding stiff fingers over a guttering flame: May this fire last like—
But he cannot finish the prayer.
