Nerdanel woke in the middle of the night with a gasp, or maybe a shout. Anairë’s naked body shifted, Lorien’s dreams still holding her fast in the arms of sleep. An owl cried out in the darkness. The world was quiet, and yet. Something was wrong. Nerdanel shifted, slipping out of their shared bed. She kissed Anairë’s braids before going to the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea. Something warm and comforting, maybe that would settle her nerves.
She was never more grateful that nothing scared her anymore when a gravelly voice spoke out from the darkness. “Ammë?”
