Written in my head on a long car drive. I love Ecthelion, and his death is one of the ones that has always stuck in my mind.

Warning for a somewhat graphic depiction of drowning. Death is not pretty, and I do not write it that way.

You made me re-read the "Fall of Gondolin".

I had forgotten how much more dramatic that battle is in the early version than in the published Silmarillion! I suppose Tolkien would have retained a lot of these details, if he'd got around to revising this section thoroughly...

No, death in battle isn't pretty and Ecthelion's certainly wasn't! But, truly, a hero.
