About Me

I've been a Tolkien fan since I was a teenager and have been recently been whiling away some sleepless nights reading Tolkien fan fiction on this and other sites, chiefly about Maedhros. However, my copy of the Silmarillion and the rest of my Tolkien collection are sitting in various crates in another country, so apologies for any canon errors... (P.S. I've meanwhile regained access to the Silmarillion, but my apologies remain!)

General Disclaimer: 'All mine, all mine!', shrills the magpie. 'Anything that glitters in this nest I stole my very own self!' (Clarifying footnote to that: Silmarils and other glittering material in the nest have been stolen from a) Tolkien, b) Dawn Felagund, c) ford_of_bruinen, d) Oshun, e) people whose work I admire but whose names I can't remember. I've tried to mention those items for which I can reconstruct a provenance in the endnotes of the individual stories.)

ETA (2013): This bio sort of needs revising as I originally wrote it when I just had started writing Silm fic...

Anyway, here is a link to a Silm fic rec/review post  of mine at the silwritersguild community on LiveJournal, posted in January 2013:

http://silwritersguild.livejournal.com/209896.html

Please consult this instead of my Favorites section on the SWG site, which I am not really maintaining.

ETA (updated 2023):

Some of my non-Silmarillion pieces are currently only archived at AO3. I also used to cross-post to a number of smaller archives that have since been taken down. I have a small SquidgeWorld account, which only contains non-Tolkien fic.

If you are looking for a "Blanket Statement": see the following entry on LiveJournal, which applies to stories posted elsewhere as well: http://hhimring.livejournal.com/24129.html

ETA 2015:

For recs now also see the SWG re-read on LiveJournal: I've added recs to the fanworks posts there for the majority of the chapters of Silmarillion. (ETA 2018: the SWG re-read has since been mirrored to Dreamwidth).

ETA (at the time of the 5th SWG celebration):

This is a Writing fanworkNo Way You Can Fall by Himring

Fingon braces himself to defy Namo for the sake of his love of Maedhros, but it turns out to be strangely unnecessary. Ages later in Tirion, there is a rather more dramatic confrontation, when Fingolfin finally suspects the reason why Fingon has immured himself in his house with the cousin he has recently retrieved from Lorien.

Mature Themes: Maedhros is gradually regaining his sanity under Fingon's care.

Nominated for the MEFAs 2011. Thank you very much, Lyra!

This is a Writing fanworkPoor Visibility by Himring

On his first visit to Barad Eithel after the Dagor Bragollach, Maedhros believes he has lost Fingon's friendship. He encounters Morwen and talks to her about Beren.

Covers a couple of episodes told at the beginning of Looking at the Stars from Fingon's point of view as seen from Maedhros's point of view.  As part of the series, this is Maedhros/Fingon, but obviously at this point...

Maedhros and Fingon alone together the last time before the Battle of Unnumbered Tears.

This is a Writing fanworkLalme, Alalme by Himring

The destruction of Beleriand after the War of Wrath--and an unusual refugee.

Written for the Season of Change challenge. It struck me that there was one piece of writing that perfectly fit this challenge already--and it had been written by Tolkien himself, but was not in the Silmarillion. I mean Treebeard's song in Two Towers, of course. This story is partly a re-write or remix of that song, in prose and from a rather different vantage point. The Ent in this story is Treebeard (or Fangorn) himself, but he didn't think about himself as Treebeard at the time.

This story was originally written for Dawn's (and "Eli"'s) Create for Life project (12-14 November 2010).

Warning for extreme violence to trees, exerted by natural forces.

Kindly nominated for the MEFAs 2011 by Dwimordene. It won Second Place in the category "Other Beings: General" and also a "Smaug's Treasure" award.

This is a Writing fanworkDown. Out. Up. by Himring

What I was not going to write, but did:

Down.   What Maedhros thought as he jumped.

Out. Up. Fingon takes Maedhros home to Tirion after his reincarnation. Finarfin insists on confronting him.  Told from different points of view (Fingon, Finarfin and, briefly, Maedhros).

This is a Writing fanworkWest Wind Blowing by Himring

During the Bragollach, a respite in the attack on Himring allows the brothers to voice private regrets and fears.

This would be a songfic, except I wrote the lyrics myself. In other words, I wrote first a poem and then a ficlet to serve as a setting for it. The piece is also closely connected with my unfinished story "The West Wind Quartet" without actually being part of it.

This is a Writing fanworkSea Wing by Himring

At the Havens, as Tuor and Idril prepare to sail into the West, Sador Labadal's niece muses on her fascination with Idril and the fate of the servants of the house of Hurin.

Originally my project for the International Day of Femslash, which means it's only about two months late. Never mind: as femslash, it isn't PWP, it's NVMHAA (Nothing Very Much Happens At All)--some readers might consider it doesn't even count.

The story also sort of features Fingon as King Arthur--but very much sort of. For reasons that will be obvious to the reader, Fingon doesn't appear in the list of Characters.

Some of this story is a bit grim, but none of the description is graphic.

Generously nominated for the MEFAs 2011 by Elleth; surprisingly, it won Second Place in the category "Men: General"!

This is a Writing fanworkIt Seems You Do by Himring

Setting: A fortified manor in the south of Hithlum. Time: Before the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.

Maedhros arrives from Dorthonion to find out how Fingon's negotiations with Orodreth are progressing. Proceedings that evening are only slightly disrupted by the machinations of a pair of cats and a lot of weather. However, when Orodreth's final answer eventually arrives, his refusal to join the alliance represents a more serious challenge.

This is a Writing fanworkAn Intense Dislike of Elves by Himring

Amlach seems to be the only one of the early Edain who is explicitly said to have entered the service of Maedhros, so he may have been the first of Men to do so and he may have gone to Himring alone. This story imagines the feelings of an Adan who originally opposed the Eldar and now finds himself spending his life among them, all on his own.

It also tries to answer the question why he picked Maedhros specifically as his prospective leader and whether Maedhros fulfilled his expectations.

I decided it might just about fit the Follow the Leader challenge.

After the Fall of Doriath, the surviving sons of Feanor retreat to Amon Ereb. Maedhros is haunted by memories of Caranthir and a promise he made to Nerdanel. Amrod persuades him to leave.

Tweaks to canon (compare end-notes).

Although the death of Caranthir and the battle of Menegroth precede the events described in the story, they are remembered in some detail and so have been marked in the Warnings.
